A Career Starting Decision

Ok, so those of you following me have realized rather quickly that I am an awful blogger. For that, I apologize, but hey, I also am raising four kids and have lots of other stuff going on, so I promise to do my best.

Moving on with my waitressing stories:

I started working when I was 15 years old. I was old enough to work at the local movie theater. All the popcorn and new release movies I could tolerate, but man, the minimum wage back then was $3.35 per hour in Orange County, California. Even for a kid with a summer job, it just didn't leave a lot of money in my pocket, so I finished out my summer there and decided that there MUST be something better out there for someone with absolutely no skills....like me!!!

My Dad suggested that I go to the local restaurant. It was called Coco's. Known for pies........ lots of pies, and mediocre food, I really wasn't that into it. Until, that is, my father said the magic word.....TIPS!!!! Well, I knew about tipping. Leave a buck or two on the table, a thanks for a good job, etc... Yeah, sure, I could use the tips, but heck, I'm not the epitome of grace by any means. But, what the heck, no guts, no glory.

I walked into the restaurant, turned my application into this old crusty guy named Bill Norton. (why in the world do I still remember that name??) He sat me down for an interview immediately. I let him know that I had no experience, but that I wanted to be a waitress. We chatted it up for a while and I'll never forget what he said. "I can teach you to be a waitress," he stated surely, "but I can't teach personality, and you have that so come in tomorrow and we'll start training you"

I walked home about a mile away with a spring in my step wondering what in the world I had just gotten into. But, I had done it, I had gotten a job, and apparently I had the personality, I guess we'll see if I had the chops to actually get it done. More on that later.

See you soon....hopefully I'll make more time to do this....it is just for fun after all. God bless!!!
